Phuket (Thailand) to Langkawi (Malaysia) -
Discovery Sailing
The Islands from Phuket to Langkawi
The area south of Phuket and all the way down to
Langkawi, Malaysia, is literally dotted with islands.
Most have ‘straight from the brochure’ perfect white
sand beaches and palm trees. Many are magnificent
Limestone structures, which have been used in many
film sets (James Bond, The Beach, etc.) and are
riddled with caves and caverns to be explored. All are
surrounded by warm turquoise water with excellent
snorkeling.
The area has some good diving and the sailing is easy,
gentle cruisin'... a lazy 15 knots or so of wind most
of the time; that means flat calm water and definitely
no seasickness!
The Thai people are also wonderful . . .it is a
natural part of their culture to be friendly and
welcoming to strangers—the "Land of Smiles" is a very
apt title. The Buddhist culture is a rich and totally
fascinating contrast to our familiar Western world.
And the FOOD!!! - It is the best treat to one's
tastebuds ever!
The area is truly all the things that the postcards
promise. If you could paint a picture of paradise, the
islands of Southern Thailand would be it!!!

Get away from the crowds on Stressbreaker, voyaging
from Phuket Thailand to Langkawi Malaysia. Join in on
a truly international voyage visiting an excellent
array of pristine islands, most of which are
uninhabited. You will be totally removed from the
regular tourist path once clear of the northern
islands groups, visiting areas that can only be gained
by private charter yacht.
Robinson Crusoe would have felt at home in these
islands. Life today is not as hard though; you can
spend your days snorkelling, kayaking, swimming and
enjoying the sumptuous meals prepared aboard by our
Thai cook. In the evening and once clear of the island
lights, the heavens open up with a kaleidoscope of
stars and planets visible in the night sky. Falling
stars can be often seen whilst lying 0n the deck if
you keep a keen watch.
Islands visited on a typical trip.
Koh Phi Phi Lee
Here we find Maya Bay made famous by the movie "The
Beach" Phi Phi Le lays 20 miles east of Phuket Island
Maya Bay is a picturesque bay with majestic limestone
cliffs. Phi Phi Lee makes a pleasant stopover before
Phi Phi Don. There is wonderful snorkelling and island
exploration to be enjoyed here.
Koh Phi Phi Don
Is an excellent anchorage in most if not
all conditions and is protected by huge limestone
cliffs. Facilities ashore include numerous restaurants
catering for all tastes, bars, nightclubs and the
mandatory clothes and souvenir shops. There are an
abundance of activities ashore to keep one occupied.
Phi Phi is a great place to partake in a traditional
Thai massage or enjoy a relaxing manicure or pedicure
or a combination of all three!
One of the most pleasant walks in the area can be
found here, to a lookout above the two bays, Tonsai
Bay and Yongkasem Bay. Picture postcard quality photos
can be taken from this spectacular viewpoint!
Koh Lanta / Koh Po
Is a short sail from Phi Phi Don. Here is found a much
more relaxed, layback atmosphere without the bustle of
the heavily travelled tourist path. A waterfall can be
found about 15 minutes walk from the anchorage passing
through a tropical rainforest.
Koh Lanta provides a secure anchorage for the night
with restaurants ashore for eating out. And some great
bars for just chilling out and watching the sunsets.
Koh Muk
Is an interesting island with its fabulous inland
lagoon (Hong) known locally as " The Emerald Cave". A
Hong is a hollow centre to an island or “room” in
Thai. Swim through a cave and find your own private
oasis with a beach and shear cliffs protruding from
all sides. Koh Muk is a unique experience and not to
be missed. Koh Muk has a protected coastline for
exploration by kayak with typical bays, caves and
sandy beaches.
Koh Ha Yai
In Thai "Ha" means “five” islands. It is a good day
stopover with a small beach and a shallow bay
facilitating easy snorkeling and kayaking in crystal
clear waters with excellent coral formations.
Koh Rok Nok & Koh Rok Nai
Is a group of two islands within easy sailing distance
of Koh Ha Yai. A number of excellent beaches with
crystal clear waters are found here in a protected
channel between the islands. Rok Nok is a great place
for drift dive or snorkel in the protected channel
between the islands. A local ranger station occupies a
small area on Koh Rok Nai and this is a great place to
visit as you can take a walk and climb to the peak of
the islands for some stunning views and great photo
opportunities. Also while on the island, you may see a
few very large (and timid!) Monitor Lizards who roam
unhindered on the island. Otherwise there are no
occupants apart from visiting yachts and Thai fishing
boats.
Butang Group
The Butang Group of islands lay southwest of Rok Nok
some 40 nautical miles. Most of the islands are
uninhabited. Koh Lipe has a small Sea Gypsy fishing
village on its north-eastern side and a few low-key
resorts and restaurants on its southern side. A
mountain stream that is feed by mountain run-off
provides crystal clear drinking water for most of the
year on Koh Adang. The Butang Islands are a
picturesque and tranquil location to spend a day or
two. An interesting walks ashore on Koh Lipe. There is
a local dive shop Canadian owned and run. Barry the
owner is famous on the islands not only for diving but
his freshly baked Brownies cooked at their island
bakery. If you wish a dive can be organized here or
from other locations within this Island group.
Koh Tarutao
One of Thailand's designated national parks with a
ranger station on it north western shore located in a
shallow bay. Its southern most tip is just two miles
from Langkawi Malaysia. Koh Tarutao is an undeveloped
island with few inhabitants. During world war two the
island was used as a prisoner of war camp. The
prisoners and guards eventually turned to pirating due
to lack of supplies. A book has been written about
those events. The English Navy was eventually sent in
to clear the remaining pirates out.
Langkawi
Arriving at the capital, Kuah Town with a population
of a small town you are now in Malaysia. Langkawi is
called the island of mysteries. Many myths relate to
the forming of the islands. Only recently a curse for
100 years has ended. Masuri, a woman who was
wrongfully condemned to death, put the curse upon the
island. Langkawi has a spectacular cable car that can
take you to the highest peak on the island for some
really spectacular 360 Deg views and a great place for
some truly memorable photos. The island is duty free,
so with time permitting it is a good place to shop.
Many new high class resorts and some new Marinas have
recently opened on the Island, so it offers a great
deal for guests wishing to enjoy Langkawi’s delights
before or after your yacht charter! Religion on the
island is mainly Muslim so a conservative dress code
should be adhered to. Links by fast ferry to mainland
Malaysia, and Thailand and also to the Malaysian
island of Penang operate every day. There is an
international airport with flights to Penang, Kuala
Lumpur and Singapore and direct charter flights to
England.
Don't forget "thank you" in Malay is "Tera Ma Kasih".
You voyage can begin or end at The Royal Langkawi
Yacht Club Langkawi.
